How to Estimate a Painting Job
A painting estimate starts with measuring wall surface area — subtract windows and doors, then multiply by the number of coats. Paint coverage is roughly 350–400 sq ft per gallon per coat. Calculate total gallons needed, add 10% for waste, then price paint at cost plus markup.
Labor is typically estimated by the room, by the hour, or as a flat rate for the full project. Be explicit about prep work — patching, sanding, priming — since these are time-consuming and customers often don't realize they're included.
