Malaysian Invoice Template
Malaysia's SST (Sales and Services Tax) system and mandatory e-invoicing rollout through LHDNM's MyInvois portal create specific requirements that every Malaysian business must follow. Eonebill's Malaysian Invoice Template is designed for this environment: SST 6% and 8% rate handling, LHDNM-compliant invoice fields, Malaysian company registration number (SSM), SST identification number display, and MyInvois e-invoice reference fields. Whether you are a law firm in Kuala Lumpur, a logistics company in Shah Alam, or a freelance consultant in Penang, this template produces fully compliant Malaysian invoices.
What Makes a Malaysian Invoice Different
Malaysia's return to the SST system after abolishing GST in 2018 created a two-track indirect tax structure. Sales Tax applies to specific goods — primarily at the manufacturing level — at rates of 5% or 10%, depending on the item category. Services Tax applies to specified services provided by registered businesses at either 6% or 8%, with the 6% rate being the most common for professional and business services. Unlike the old GST, SST is not a multi-stage creditable tax — input tax cannot generally be recovered — which simplifies some aspects of pricing but requires businesses to be precise about which items and services are taxable.
The most significant recent change is the mandatory e-invoicing requirement. The LHDNM (Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri Malaysia) introduced the MyInvois system requiring all registered businesses to submit invoices electronically through its portal. The system assigns a unique e-invoice number and requires specific data fields including the seller's and buyer's Malaysian company registration number (SSM), SST identification number, and tax breakdown. From 2024-2025, this mandate is rolling out by turnover threshold. Even businesses not yet mandated should structure their invoices to be e-invoice ready.
Malaysian invoices also carry the SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) company registration number prominently. This is the 12-digit number issued by the Companies Commission of Malaysia to every registered business entity. It appears alongside the SST number on all tax invoices and official documents.
Key Requirements for Malaysian Invoices
Legal Mandatory Fields
A compliant Malaysian SST invoice must contain: the word "Invoice" or "Tax Invoice"; supplier's registered business name and address; supplier's SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) company registration number; supplier's SST identification number (ST XXXXXXXXXX format) for service tax, or SA number for sales tax; invoice number (unique, sequential); date of issue; buyer's business name, address, and SSM or IC number (for Malaysian businesses); description of goods or services with quantities; unit price and total amount per line; subtotal before SST; SST rate applied (6% or 8% for services, 5% or 10% for goods); total SST amount; total amount payable including SST; and for e-invoice compliance, the MyInvois reference number and QR code.
Tax Identification Numbers
Malaysia uses two main business identifiers on invoices. The SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) registration number is a 12-digit number issued by the Companies Commission to every registered entity (e.g., 123456789A01). For SST purposes, registered service providers display their SST identification number in the format ST followed by 10 digits (e.g., ST 12345678901). Manufacturers display SA followed by their identification number for Sales Tax. Both numbers must be shown on invoices by registered businesses.
Currency and Number Formatting
Malaysian invoices use Malaysian Ringgit (MYR, RM). The RM symbol typically appears before the amount: RM1,250.00 or RM 1,250.00. The decimal separator is a full stop and thousands separator is a comma, consistent with international conventions (e.g., RM125,000.00). Eonebill's Malaysian template automatically applies correct MYR formatting and supports dual-currency display for international clients.
